Happy 4th!

Hi all, Happy 4th!
My phone was not usable this week, so I don’t have nearly enough pictures of Susie’s first 4th of July! We had a great day as a family and then spent the evening with dear friends. Suzie was kind of indifferent to the fireworks but loved sparklers. She is doing SO WELL! She even let two of our friends hold her and acted like it was completely normal. Simply amazing!

Also, since my last post, we left her with a babysitter and she did great!! It was our Daycare’s backup provider so she knew her well which made it possible, and she had all the big kids to distract her, but still it was pretty special. She has even gotten to the point that she doesn’t cry every day at daycare drop offs anymore. She tears up, but puts on a brave face. She is so strong! She is doing great with Brian and will snuggle and play with him and even asks for him when he’s not home.

She’s also eating a huge variety of foods now and likes applesauce and chicken nuggets (which a lots of china adoptees do not) so we are relieved as those are staples for the Mercer kids!

She is extremely mobile now and is possibly even more than she was before her leg broke. Brian tries to take her swimming a couple times a week and we let her crawl & scoot everywhere. She’s fast! She can also get up and down off couches and pulls up to standing every so often, which is scary! We certainly do not encourage that but have been told to just follow her lead. She need to work and grow her leg muscles. We had a physical therapy appointment and they were blown away by how mobile and coordinated she is. We don’t even have to go regularly, they just gave us more ideas for activities at home.

We also saw her orthopedist and her leg is healing well. He was now willing to discuss putting rods in her femurs and tibias and said we could do the side that wasn’t broken first and do the other side later when the bones are ready. We have some tests we still need to do first to ensure surgery is safe (MRI and an eval with pulmonology) but we are at least on the right track. When she gets rods they will re-break and straighten her legs and then she will be able to support her weight. Also, when she has future fractures, the bones will already be supported internally and will still heal straight and not need casts (just splints)!
Though I’m not looking forward to a surgery recovery and know it will be hard on her, I’m anxious to have it done and behind us.
